Eric Lefkofsky Helps Fight Cancer in the U.S.

The number of cancer survivors in the U.S. is rapidly growing; this is attributed to the expanding cancer screening efforts, aging population, and recent innovation in the cancer treatment. However, the majority of the survivors is excluded from the cancer clinical trials. Over 80 percent of the NCI (National Cancer Institutes) that are affiliated to lung cancer trials exclude patients with cancer.

Those restrictive eligibility criteria might exclude more than 25 percent of people diagnosed with cancer from taking the trials. Even though significant scientific developments have made understanding the danger of developing a future primary cancer amongst some specific group of cancer survivors, the earlier work fails to disclose the number of patients with incidents of cancer that have survived prior cancer.

Methods

With the help of the National Cancer Institute’s SEER cancer registry program, a reported prevalence of prior cancer among patients recently diagnosed with cancer is given out. The report categorizes incident cancer as first or primary cancer and higher primary or second order cancer site. The appendix in the supplementary list tumors is categorized as belonging to the similar or different site. SEER gathers the number, but not the cancer sites that are diagnosed outside geographically assigned registry regions.

Discussion

Twenty-five percent of seniors and over 10 percent of younger people that were recently diagnosed with cancer have a history of prior cancer. Prior cancer presents necessary implications for cancer care delivery, and patients might have competing priorities concerning treatment decisions. For this reason, a new diagnosis will interrupt management, treatment adherence or some results that are related to prior cancer.
